In
2000, ShopRite Partners In Caring release the findings of a hunger
survey conducted in the economically thriving North Eastern corridor
in the US. Many contradictory and illuminating findings were uncovered
that reveal a significant gap between perception and reality of
hunger.

A disturbing 30 percent of residents say they know someone in their
community who is currently struggling with buying enough food or
the right type of food to meet the nutritional needs of their families.
Equally alarming, 28 percent of the same people admitted that they
or someone in their immediate family has had, at some time, difficulty
putting enough food or the right type of food on the table.
When the open-ended question was asked "What is the biggest
social problem facing your community today?" hunger was not
mentioned as the top of mind social concern, while drugs, education
and crime were among the most common responses.
