To
help raise hunger awareness, ShopRite commissioned an art exhibit
to tell the story of those who struggle to provide the basic necessities
of food for themselves and their families. The exhibit is currently
traveling throughout the five states ShopRite serves, as well
as to the corporate headquarters of many of the "partners"
in caring. The hope is that the exposure will educate individuals
and help them realize that those who experience hunger are not
necessarily homeless or without jobs; they are seemingly ordinary
people who have trouble making ends meet, often because of unexpected
circumstances.
The
exhibit is a collaborative effort between ShopRite Partners In Caring,
photographer Kathleen Dempsey, and students from Morristown (New
Jersey) High School's Chapter of the National Arts Honor Society.
Ms. Dempsey is an accomplished and socially conscious photographer
based in Madison, New Jersey. She is experienced in photographing
subjects with a respectful, artistic and sensitive hand. Her work
has been displayed in Washington, DC, in Ohio at the International
Conference for Survivors, and in New Jersey at The Deirdre O'Brien
Child Advocacy Center and the Morris Museum. Ms. Dempsey, having
once worked in Social Services, brings a unique sensitivity to this
subject.
The students have been recognized numerous times for their talent
and contributions to the arts and have completed several commissioned
projects for other New Jersey-based companies. The group, working
under the direction of their teacher, Mira Morrison, is comprised
of juniors and seniors, many of whom have continued to study fine
art on the collegiate level.

The exhibit employs a technique known as "Assemblage."
Assemblage is a composition
consisting of an arrangement of miscellaneous objects. It was chosen
to display the images because of the form's inherent ability to
convey the emotional component of its subject. According to a number
of art scholars, Assemblage is infused with emotion, attitude and
spirit.
