Local Dignitaries “Help Bag Hunger” in ShopRite Stores

“Was that the mayor I saw bagging groceries in ShopRite?” “Doesn’t that grocery bagger look familiar?” “Did the senator just crush my eggs?”

Questions like these were common in many local communities on Wednesday, September 22nd as ShopRite helped “bag” hunger on a day declared “ShopRite Partners In Caring Day” in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. Official proclamations were issued in each state in recognition of ShopRite’s efforts to raise funds and awareness in the fight against hunger.

The second annual “ShopRite Partners In Caring Day” put the spotlight on the important issue of hunger in our communities by calling on state officials and dignitaries to spend time in their local ShopRite stores bagging groceries, collecting donations and talking to customers about the growing need for support of local food banks. More than 170 ShopRite stores in six states participated in the program.

“This is the second year that local officials have turned out to support our “Help Bag Hunger Day,” said Christine Magyarits, ShopRite Partners In Caring spokesperson. “We appreciate them taking time out of their busy schedules to support this worthy cause. Their presence really makes an impact. Seeing your mayor bagging your groceries really brings the message home!”

ShopRite Partners In Caring is a year-round, community-based, hunger-fighting initiative that works with 50 food industry manufacturers to provide more than $2 million annually to qualified charitable agencies in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania. Since its inception in 1999, ShopRite Partners In Caring has donated $24 million to more than 1,700 charities.

ShopRite Partners In Caring supports emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, child care centers, battered women's shelters, senior citizen programs, drug rehab centers, programs for the mentally and physically disabled, after-school programs and other organizations that aid those in need.

“We hope that everyone continues to support the efforts of our ShopRite Partners In Caring Program to help feed the hungry,” continued Ms. Magyarits. “Fighting hunger in our local communities is an ongoing effort that we have embraced and we salute the staff members and volunteers of the food banks and pantries who face this battle every day.”
