Special Edition Cheerios Box Honors Inspiring Individuals for Raising Hunger Awareness Through Creative Expression

ShopRite Debuts Winners of their ShopRite Partners In Caring Expressions of Hunger Video Contest

Edison, NJ (August 30, 2010) – Putting a “face” on the devastating effects of hunger is not something one can easily do. With nearly one in six Americans dealing with the issue of hunger, it is apparent that the “faces” of hunger extend across all different age groups, communities and families. Helping to shed light on this reality and inspire others to join in on the fight against hunger, ShopRite and General Mills looked to the power of creative expression and launched their first-ever online video contest, Expressions of Hunger.

The ShopRite Partners In Caring Expressions of Hunger video contest called upon individuals and groups to creatively express their views about the issue of hunger through the use of song, poetry, dance or dramatic reading. People of all ages and backgrounds submitted videos that showcased a broad-range of artistic talents including a singing guitar soloist, dramatic poetry readings, rappers and silent films – all capturing their passionate views on the issue of hunger.

The six winning entries were judged and selected based on originality, creativity and the ability to evoke emotion and generate awareness on the issue of hunger. The winners include: Amie Valpone of Manhattan, N.Y.; Keith Dynof of Lawrence Harbor, N.J.; Dolores Catalano and her children Brian and Andrew of Marlboro, N.J.; Justina of Clifton, N.J.; a group from  the Trenton, N.J. Soup Kitchen’s The SHARE Project comprised of Jaime Parker, Derrick Branch, Kyle Dorsey, Rosemarie Browne, Raul Cortes, Cynthia Groya, Grayling Hopson, Patricia Johnson, Ethel Mack, Frank Lettieri, Barbara Parker, Richard Rice, Mary Shannon, Sheldon Sinclair, Laney Sokolow, J. Steinhauer, Chris Timko and Edward Young; and a group with SouperVan, a new hunger-fighting organization from Central N.J. that consists of Nicholas Kubian, Dominick Rodriguez, Catherine Wang, Rachel Platt, Kassandra Medina, Meekaaeel DeBradley and David Palacios.
